You know what I’ve been thinking? Sometimes, when a team wins a championship – no matter the sport or level – it gets comfortable.
For my 1980s culture friends, it’s like when Mickey told Rocky that being “civilized” is the worst thing that can happen to a fighter.
But Marblehead – last year’s Division 3 champion – didn’t get comfortable or civilized. Through two games, it looks like the Headers are hungry as ever.
“We are starting from zero,” said coach Mark Marfione ahead of the season. “We are just one of 50 teams and we just have to work every day and get better.”
Let’s take a look at games one and two.
A title defense began the moment the puck dropped against Shawsheen, and the Headers didn’t disappoint in a 5-0 win. London McDonald and Crew Monaco each scored twice, while nine skaters went home with assists.
Two days later against Beverly, the Headers took care of business, 3-1. McDonald continued his hot start with another goal and two assists. Hayden Gallo polished things off with an empty-netter.
As if the week could get any better, Teddy Dulac and Colin White each scored their first varsity goals across the two-game stretch.
Marblehead – seeking a 3-0 start – visits the Valley Forum to take on Malden Catholic this Saturday. Puck-drop is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Headers, good week.
