To the editor:
I wonder how many times this will happen before people get what’s going on. First, Trump scuttles a bipartisan bill on the border problem. Now Trump and Musk scuttle a bipartisan government shutdown bill.
It’s not that the bills were badly written. The fact that the elected representatives of the people hammered them out after considerable debate means they are exactly what the Constitution says they should be … representative of the will of the people.
It’s that “will of the people” part that Trump and Musk hate so much. Trump believes the people are too stupid to make good decisions, and decisions must be made by very wealthy, very powerful, very handsome, very smart, and very important people instead. Trump and Musk want the executive branch to do all the legislating or else to accept all the executive department wishes and wants when Congress does act.
In other words, Trump wants to be king. He wants the entire country to accept him as someone whose every policy is “perfect” in every way. Why is it perfect? Because he says so.
