LYNN – The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Fundraiser Campaign has been operating in Massachusetts since the late 1800s, but more recently, the campaign has started introducing new virtual elements.
For example, while The Salvation Army’s Lynn branch still set up physical red kettle stands during this season’s campaign, typically near local grocery stores like Stop & Shop or Market Basket, they have also expanded upon their online presence.
And, while the physical component of the campaign is now over, online donations will still be accepted until Dec. 31.
Capt. Enmanuel Villegas, a pastor and corps officer for The Salvation Army Lynn Corps Community Center, explained that the fundraiser’s virtual component makes it easier and more convenient for people to donate. This year, the Salvation Army Lynn has also started using digital QR codes to improve accessibility.
Villegas emphasized that the Red Kettle Campaign is the Lynn branch’s biggest source of funds for the year, calling it the “most crucial part of the season.”
The funds contribute to a variety of programs, such as a food pantry service, clothing vouchers, and rent and utilities assistance.
Unfortunately, according to Villegas, the amount of funds raised this year has been down, both statewide, and in Lynn. While statewide fundraising is down by roughly 20-30%, the Lynn branch has seen a 40% decrease in fundraising. Villegas is hoping the virtual kettle will help make up that gap.
