BOSTON – State Rep. Sean Reid was sworn in Wednesday as the 11th Essex District representative.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. Some notable moments of the ceremony included a speech from Governor Maura Healey, and the re-election of Ron Mariano as the Massachusetts Speaker of the House.
“Today was officially the beginning of something that’s truly the privilege and responsibility of a lifetime,” Reid said.
“I really pride myself on my accessibility, my transparency, [and] my dedication to the community. I hope that if anyone ever has any questions or ideas or anything at all, that they can always feel free to reach out to me directly.”
Reid, who was born and raised in West Lynn, which is part of the district he now represents, highlighted some of the key priorities that he intends to focus on as a representative. “No. 1 is housing affordability,” he said. “As someone who grew up housing insecure and lived in a shelter for some time, I understand the challenges that people are facing when it comes to housing.”
Reid, who is also a member of the Lynn School Committee, also pointed to education, and making sure that schools get the funding they need, as another priority.
Reid also cited transportation as an important issue, saying he hopes to help improve the commuter rail, reduce traffic, and fix roads. “I think as any resident unfortunately knows, it’s hard to get from point A to point B [in Lynn],” he said.
Wednesday marked Reid’s first full day as a representative for the 11th Essex District. He replaces Peter Capano, who retired. Reid will represent parts of West Lynn and Nahant.
“I hope that people understand that I’m always there to fight, and they have a fighter,” Reid added.
