Joey Barrett

January 3, 2025 by Joey Barrett

It was a happy Friday for Lynn Tech’s girls basketball team, which delivered in front of the home faithful with a monstrous 47-23 win against Innovation Academy Charter School.

Engelyz Bingham kicked off the new year with, frankly, the same results. The do-it-all Tiger scored 11 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

But Tech’s offense was on full display from beginning to end. Also contributing were Allison Morales (11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks), Jaylianniez Beauchamp (6 points, 5 steals, 2 assists), Cassidy Caled (5 points, 7 rebounds), and Elena Bishop (4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks).

Tech stands at 4-2 with wins against Nashoba Valley, KIPP Academy, and Innovation (0-6) twice after December’s 68-25 road win. Grace Calvagno led Innovation with seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Somerville 54
Lynn English 49

Despite three Lady Bulldogs scoring in double-digits, English fell by five points in Somerville. Leading the way were Amara Flores (13 points), Dayana Hios (12), and Alisha Soto (10).

St. Mary’s 77
Cardinal Spellman 12

The Spartans improved to 7-1 after a dominant home performance against Cardinal Spellman. Bella Owumi (21 points), Charleigh Green (12), Reese Matela (10), and Gabi Lorenzini (7) played well for a versatile St. Mary’s offense.

Swampscott 48
Whittier Regional Tech 44

Anna Kanders scored 20 points and the Big Blue squeaked out of Whittier Tech victorious. Sam Ward scored 11 points after burying three triples in the first half. Olivia Quagrello chipped in nine points, while Maddie Lilley did her thing on the glass with seven rebounds.

Bishop Fenwick 55
Archbishop Williams 39

Caitlin Boyle’s 22-point, 10-rebound double-double – to go with four blocks – helped catapult the Lady Crusaders (4-1) on home hardwood. Celia Neilson played a strong game with 11 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and five steals, while Kyleigh Pidgeon (9 points) and Sienna Mancinelli (5) also contributed.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Peabody 59
Salem Academy 34

With Peabody reaching the double-digit mark in steals, the Tanners took advantage and defeated Salem Academy on the road. Leading the way were Jariel Tolentino (19 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals), Thad Broughton Jr. (15 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals), Mark Mendonca (6 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals), and Jimmy Festa (3 points, 4 rebounds). Joe Smith (3 points) and Stephen Brown also played well, according to Peabody coach Thad Broughton Sr.

“We were able to get some steals and get some transition hoops to get ourselves going,” said Broughton Sr., whose Tanners upped their record to 3-3.

Lynnfield 58
North Reading 47

With Alex Fleming (21 points, 15 rebounds), Madux Iovinelli (12 points, 10 rebounds), and Iain McCarthy (10 points) leading the charge, the visiting Pioneers jumped to 3-0 with a double-digit victory against North Reading Friday night.

St. Mary’s 58
Cardinal Spellman 29

The visiting Spartans built upon a 32-11 halftime lead and cruised from there, upping their record to 6-1.
