SWAMPSCOTT — Veterans, family and friends are encouraged to head down to Café Avellino to tell stories and make some new friends during the “Veteran’s Coffee Hour” event.
According to Teresa Sirignano, owner of Café Avellino (located at 242 Humphrey St.), the event on Jan. 15 is a great chance for veterans or their families to connect with their community, tell their stories and find moral support from people who know what it’s like to walk in their shoes. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
“The biggest thing for me is being able to be a part of it,” Sirignano said. “To see them get together, and getting to hear all their stories is what really impacts me.”
She said the event is a collaboration between the café and the Lynn-Swampscott Veterans’ Services. According to its Facebook page, the organization is a “one-stop-shop” for local veterans and their families who may need information or help receiving veteran benefits to which they’re entitled.
Aside from trying to rally the community together, Sirignano noted the emphasis the café puts on connection and interaction when residents step inside. “There’s very little to almost no technology,” she said. “And I think that’s something unique, because people have less distractions, they’ll talk more and hear each other’s stories.”
