NAHANT — Laura Petrovich-Cheney, a teacher at Johnson Elementary School, will be exhibiting three art sculptures at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton.
The exhibition will highlight contemporary artwork from previously existing materials in order to redefine the “concept of craft in the twenty-first century,” according to the press release. Opening reception for the event kicks off Sunday, Jan. 12 from 2-4 p.m.
Petrovich-Cheney is an accomplished sculptor and educator, bridging the realms of traditional and transformative art, the press release said. She has been the art teacher at Johnson Elementary since 2021, and she has been fostering creativity and passion in her students during her time there. Her art has been featured in several exhibitions and galleries that illuminate both her awareness and craftsmanship.
Petrovich-Cheney’s contributions to the Jan. 12 exhibition feature intricate, quilt-like creations, made from reclaimed wood that was salvaged from environmental disasters. The event is open to all community members, who are encouraged to come and see her metamorphic designs.
Aside from her installations at the Fuller Craft Museum, she will also have a piece on display at The Art Gallery at New England Art Center, located in Boston’s SOWA Art District, the press release said. Opening reception for that event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 3-5 p.m.
The press release described Petrovich-Cheney’s “dual exhibitions” as a showcase of her unique use of repurposed materials and her dedication to creating moving pieces of art that represent resilience and environmental consciousness.
