SWAMPSCOTT — The Police Department received multiple calls around 9:15 a.m. Thursday about a resident who was acting in an erratic and volatile manner while waving a knife outside the window of his home.
“A perimeter of the residence was secured, and neighbors were evacuated from the area as a safety precaution,” according to the press release.
By using the cruiser’s public address system, police were able to contact the person promptly, and the police were able to initiate contact. Officers were able to get the individual to exit his home in a peaceful and collaborative manner, “which ultimately led to the male subject being secured and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation,” the press release said.
The press release cited the importance of neighbors and community members reporting suspicious behavior to the police as well as emphasizing the importance of officers seeking to aid persons in crisis. “Ultimately, the de-escalation efforts by the officers yielded the best possible outcome for this individual and our community,” the press release said.
The Swampscott Police thanked the Lynn Police, who were vital in their quick response as a mutual aid, the press release added.
The Police Department urges anyone experiencing a mental health crisis to seek immediate assistance by dialing 911. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can also be contacted by dialing 988.
