It’s simple – call Tuesday the night of comebacks.
Both the St. Mary’s and Lynn Classical girls basketball teams faced double-digit deficits before leaving their home gyms victorious.
Cathedral – fearless at the Tony C. Gymnasium in Lynn – shot out to a 21-12 halftime lead before extending to 18 points in the third quarter.
From there, the Spartans (10-1) refused to go down with a monstrous 21-2 run. Jillian Roberts buried a clutch 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth before Bella Owumi hit the game-winning triple with less than 10 seconds on the clock. Also contributing were Juliana Conte (9 points) and Gabi Lorenzini (8).
Classical trailed Medford by 11 points at halftime before racing to a 53-38 win. A 22-6 fourth-quarter run catapulted the Lady Rams (7-2) to another victory.
Coach Tom Sawyer credited resilience, perseverance, and defense as keys to victory.
“If you asked me at halftime that it would be the final score, I’d tell you that you weren’t using your head,” he said. “The kids just executed. We didn’t change one thing offensively or defensively. The kids just executed better, made a few shots, made a few stops, and turned it around. And the defensive effort and focus was monumental.”
Leading the way were Divine Egbuta (19 points), Savannah Tang (14), and Keisha Perez (12).
