SWAMPSCOTT — The Swampscott Church of Spiritualism has declared to the community that it “chooses love.”
The church, located on 59 Burril St., will host an event on Jan. 25 entitled “Choose love – an offering of healing sounds with artist Akili Jamal Haynes and Guests.” The event will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and will showcase musicians such as saxophonist Stan Strickland, drummer Yoron Israel, and Haitian drummers Josil Robert Joseph and Arnaud Lauture.
“Join us for a wonderful evening of music, inspiration, and community,” the church said in a Facebook post. The church described the event as “an amazing line up for an uplifting and unforgettable music gathering.”
Haynes, who had been mentored by jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, is an accomplished Boston-based composer and a multi-instrumentalist with a specialty in drums, bass, guitar and poetry, according to his website worldofchibuzo.org. The site also describes the World of Chibuzo as an interdisciplinary organization with the mission to create healing sounds and bring art, life, and economic activity into communities that value black, indigenous and other people of color.
The Swampscott Church of Spiritualism focuses on offering people a “different but uplifting experience,” according to its mission statement. The church states that it grounds its beliefs in a set of principles that draw from the natural laws of the universe. “We believe that life is continuous after the change called death and offer proof each Sunday through the demonstration of spirit communication,” their mission statement said.
The church offers a community of like-minded people coming together in love, acceptance and humility, where people share spiritual journeys and learn from one another. “As a community, we embrace the love that this life offers and the eternal connection we all share,” the website said.
