To the editor:
Now that the election is over, all eyes turn toward what happens next year. We know one topic that will be top of mind is taxes. Many of the 2017 tax cuts are set to expire in 2025. Congress will want to extend many of them. But who will get priority?
Many voters said higher prices were a determining factor in how they voted. They are angry. Lawmakers should pay attention.
If Congress wants to help struggling Americans, they should expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). These credits give workers and families in low-wage jobs a much-needed financial boost to help with groceries, rent, and childcare. They also help keep millions of Americans out of poverty each year.
Another tax cut for the rich is not what voters want. I want our representatives and senators to make expanding the CTC and EITC for people with low-incomes a top priority next year.
Sincerely,
William Deignan
