January 19, 2025 by Joey Barrett

Swampscott’s boys basketball team cruised by Westerly (Rhode Island), 72-56, in Saturday’s Hoophall Classic at Springfield College. Leading the first-round matchup were Connor Chiarello (25 points), Teddy O’Neill (19), Chase Groothuis (11), and Gabe Tripp (8).

The next day, however, didn’t come with the same success. The Big Blue (7-3) fell in their championship game, 44-36, to Haldane High School of New York, which was led by Zane Del Pozo (15 points) and Luke Bozsik (12). O’Neill led Swampscott with 14 points. The game was played at 8 a.m. to avoid an impending snowstorm.

Next up for Swampscott is a home game against Masconomet on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 63
Everett 54

St. Mary’s made its way to Emmanuel College to compete in the Citi Team Hoops Classic on Sunday. After a hard-fought showdown against Everett, the Spartans upped their record to 12-0 behind JJ Martinez’s 23 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Also contributing were Jake Fortier (11 points) and Devell Pamplin (10 points, 9 rebounds). St. Mary’s is back at the Tony C. Gymnasium Friday against Bishop Fenwick (6:30 p.m.).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Joseph’s Academy 47
St. Mary’s 40

After Friday’s win against Evangelical Christian, the Spartans stayed put in Fort Myers, Florida as part of the Bishop Verot Shootout on Saturday to take on St. Joseph’s Academy, a program with six state championships (‘75, ‘91-94, ‘04) and 12 semifinal appearances. Despite a spirited comeback and strong performances from Bella Owumi (16 points) and Jaylin Frye (5), St. Mary’s (11-2) fell short by single digits.

Marblehead 31
Danvers 30

Behind Tess Andriano, who netted a game-high 14 points, Marblehead held off a comeback bid from Danvers. The Magicians led, 21-10, at halftime before the Falcons’ second-half run. Also contributing for Marblehead were Maddie Forbes (5 points), Sophie Bacon (3), Greta Sachs (2), Lucy McDonald (2), and Samara Dosch, who “played well all night,” according to coach Paul Moran.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 3
Milton 0

Unfamiliar ice was no problem for St. Mary’s (9-3), which picked up a shutout win behind netminder Matthew Smith Jr. It was his second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. Kalen Huddle, Chase Collins, and Colton Carpenter were goal-scorers, while Caleb Racki, Joey Calder, and Finn Racki compiled assists.

Triton 3
Lynnfield 2

Despite a 2-0 lead for Lynnfield, with goals coming from Anthony George and Owen Considine (4-on-4), host Triton equalized in the third period before winning in sudden-death overtime.

Xaverian 2
St. John’s Prep 1

The Prep – even with a 48-31 shot advantage – fell to 4-6. Xaverian took advantage of an odd-man rush to score the game-winning goal with six minutes to go. Brandon Ward scored for The Prep, assisted by Ryan Delucia and Sam Croke.

GIRLS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 3
Arlington Catholic 0

Freshman Avery Sico secured her first career shutout in the Spartans’ home win against Arlington Catholic on Saturday. Kiera Twomey netted a pair of goals, while Emma Doucette added another. St. Mary’s upped its record to 3-6-1 before a hopeful late-season push.

TRACK AND FIELD

St. Mary’s took part in the Division 4 MSTCA relays and left with some strong performances. The girls 4×400 team of Lea Deronja, Isabella Michel, Cam Dunn, and Kelsey Kwiatek medaled with a fourth-place performance. The 4:24 time was good for a school record.

The sprint medley relay team of Deronja, Princess-Kailyn Njika, Dunn, and Kwiatek medaled with a fifth-place outing. The shot put team of Harmony Hope, Julianie Momplaisir, and Jordin Perry took ninth.

Justin Jennings, Devin Duval, Jimmy Jennings, and Lucian Paula medaled with a seventh-place performance in the sprint medley relay, while the 4×50-yard dash team of Duval, Dylan Njika, Justin Jennings, and Mehdi Khemmich placed eighth. The 4×400 squad of Paula, Duval, Jimmy Jennings, and Rubell Cornelio also impressed, taking seventh with a season-best time.
