NAHANT — The Nahant Library has been working on creating some alternative ways to both educate and entertain children, which will combine learning and fun all in one program.
Partnering with Lynn Public Schools and the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Program (CFCE), the library has figured out a way to bring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to students in a way that’s as engaging as it is entertaining. The program runs from Jan. 13 until March 17
“They come once a week to do programs for families and host playtime where kids can play, but they also learn about everything from science and engineering to math,” Library Director Nori Morganstein said. She noted the CFCE also has programs for children and families in Lynn and Saugus.
Morganstein has seen a big impact on the young attendees since the event has kicked off. “After school, kids get excited and they’re ready to be out of the classroom, and everyone has this expectation that libraries are very quiet places, but that’s not necessarily true anymore,” Morganstein said. “But it’s nice having kids come learn and wind down here at the library.”
She reflected on how the events have helped foster a closer community and more communal engagement at the library. “It’s been great getting to meet more families and to see them come back and check out books,” she said. “We want them to keep coming as they grow older. That’s what we hope for.”
