Call it a happy Tuesday for Lynn Classical High, which saw its boys and girls basketball teams become state tournament-eligible after winning their 10th games.
The girls traveled to Malden, a place coach Tom Sawyer said is “always a difficult place to play.” But his Lady Rams (10-2) clinched their spot with a 61-47 win.
Leading the way were Divine Egbuta and Jada Tejada, who both scored 16 points, as well as Evelyn Diaz, who netted 10 points off the bench.
“We really didn’t change much at halftime,” said Sawyer, whose group trailed by six points at the break. “We just executed better both offensively and defensively.”
Next up for Classical is a road game in Somerville beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
On the boys’ side, they took down Malden, 70-56, at home behind Rolky Brea Arias (18 points, 14 rebounds), Kameron Rucker (17 points, 5 assists), and Deshawn Rucker (16 points).
“That was definitely one of our goals,” said coach Marvin Avery when asked about the state tournament. “Now, we’re looking to extend our winning streak to eight games. I was very happy with our defense early on tonight.”
Avery and the Rams (10-3) are back in action Thursday with tip-off set for 6 p.m. in Medford.
