SWAMPSCOTT — S.U.R.E (Swampscott Unites, Respects, Embraces) Diversity is busy at work getting ready to educate members and residents on the life and trials of Malcolm X.
The organization will be hosting its “S.U.R.E. Diversity Book Club” event on Monday from 5-6 p.m. at the Swampscott Public Library. During the event, attendees will get a chance to dive into the book, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X.”
The aim of the organization is to present books that are aligned with cultural themes, holidays, and international celebrations designated by the U.N. (United Nations) to members and attendees, according to a press release.
A limited number of copies of the autobiography will be available for residents at the main desk in the Swampscott Public Library. The same can be said for each book selected in the following months.
Formed in 2016, S.U.R.E. Diversity is a volunteer community group that aspires to encourage, educate, and collaborate in building a welcoming, nurturing, respectful and inclusive Swampscott community, according to the mission statement on its website.
“The Autobiography of Malcolm X was first published in 1965, the same year he was assassinated. The book was important then, and it is important now, especially in a time when books about Black history and culture have been banned in many places,” Rachel Shiryayeva, founder of the S.U.R.E. Diversity Book Club said.
