LTTE: Heart of coal

To the editor

January 22, 2025 by To the editor

To the editor:

Donald Trump (DJT) was never a populist, and his economic policies are designed to enrich his corporate allies at the expense of the rest of the country. DJT and the Republican party routinely act against the well-being of 99% of the country at the expense of the working class, the environment, and the future.

The 2017 tax cuts lowered corporate tax rates to a flat 21%, which was marketed as a move that would pay for itself in increased economic gains and stimulate corporate reinvestment. The cuts instead decreased overall tax revenue and increased the national debt. Corporations invested the tax savings into buying back their stocks instead of raising wages. Meanwhile, the purchasing power of the average worker’s income has stayed stagnant over the past 50 years. If Republicans extend these cuts in 2025, they will continue a massive transfer of wealth to those who do not need it.

The Republican party’s stance on global warming is to deny that there is any need to phase out fossil fuel production. This delusion puts the world on a certain course for sea level rise if drastic measures are not taken. Phasing out fossil fuels is possible in our lifetime, but politicians need to have the will to override the short-sighted greed of corporations. DJT and Republicans are willing to let the world burn if it means more money for themselves and their corporate donors.

Massachusetts leaders and citizens must commit to measures that create living-wage jobs that work constructively towards a sustainable future.  There is not enough time left for anything other than bold measures. Americans deserve a future where corporate greed is not treated as the greater good.

Sincerely,

Alex DePalma
