Children show off their creations during Messy Mornings arts and crafts program at the Lynn Public Library's Children Department. (Lynn Public Library)

Brick-by-brick: Library to host Lego build

LYNN — The Children’s Department at the Lynn Public Library is encouraging parents to bring their kids to LEGO Build Night on Feb. 4.

These gatherings, which begin at 6 p.m., allow children to create whatever comes to mind, though the department provides pre-constructed Lego sculptures, like trucks and buildings, to serve as inspiration. The library then displays the kids’ creations for one month, Children Librarian Teri Manning said.

Children are also welcome to try their hands making various crafts during Messy Mornings, Feb. 5 and 12 from 10-11 a.m., and After School Craft on Feb. 11 from 3-4 p.m. The Children’s Department will also hold a vacation week drop-in from Feb. 18 to 22 during regular library hours.

Other upcoming events include Pajama Story Time on Feb. 13 from 6-7 p.m. And from 3-4 p.m. that day, children can stop in to meet Percy, the Therapy Dog. Kids are encouraged to ask the handler questions, read Percy a story, or just give him pats.

While Legos may be falling off the list of playthings kids find entertaining these days, the Children’s Department wants to rebuild interest in the build event to a level it sees with Bingo Night, held the last Tuesday of the month. Bingo Night, Manning said, is becoming more popular by the week with parents and children alike.

That follows what Manning sees as a general uptick in the number of patrons visiting the library in the past few years as the isolation of the pandemic gradually fades into memory.

“We encourage all families to come in,” Manning said. “And we encourage people to come in and try to come up with something.”

So bring the kids to the library between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays to let the creative juices flow.

“The library is a fun place for people to try new things,” Manning said.
