All season long the Saugus boys basketball team never quit no matter what the score is. On Monday evening they trailed by seven points in the fourth quarter and found a way to come back and win 56-54 over the Vikings.
Saugus’ Ryan Dupuy had a game to remember, scoring 18 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, and blocking seven shots to fuel the Sachems. Huey Josama posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
When the game was close late in the game Jordan Rodriguez hit two clutch threes to help Saugus complete the comeback.
Saugus improves to 5-9 on the season and will look to ride the momentum into Danvers on Thursday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 53
KIPP 50
The Crusaders protected home court against the Panthers. Fenwick’s Nate Alder scored a team-high 17 points, while teammate Damon Mataragas added 13 to help propel the Crusaders.
Fenwick head coach Chris Timson signaled out Brady Jenkins for his “strong defensive game.”
Despite coming out on the losing end, KIPP’s Trosky Peña scored his 1,000th point, etching his name into KIPP’s history books.
Masconomet 64
Marblehead 43
The start to the game couldn’t have gone worse for Marblehead. The Magicians, according to head coach Mike Giardi, “couldn’t get the ball in the hole in the first half.” Meanwhile, Masco scored 23 of its first 43 first-half points in the first quarter.
Senior captain Sam Thompson led Marblehead with 12 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 50
Wakefield 25
The Spartans got the job done on Monday evening with a convincing win over Wakefield. Bella led the way for St. Mary’s with 12 points, two of which got her to 1,000 points in her career.
Lily Norton and Juliana Conte both added nine points while the Spartans got a big contribution from Tabby Lopes who scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Lynn Tech 47
Greater Lawrence 28
In a team effort, the Lynn Tech Tigers pounced on Greater Lawrence and hit the 10-win mark this season with only three losses.
It was a balanced offense for the Tigers with Engelyz Bingham netting 13 points with nine rebounds, Jaylianniez Beauchamp added 12 points along with seven steals and four rebounds. Allison Morales scored 12, grabbed seven rebounds and came up with three steals in the win.
Niya Bingham controlled the glass with 11 rebounds to go along with five points and three steals.
North Andover 47
Peabody 38
The Tanners couldn’t pull off the road upset against North Andover. Ally Bettencourt and Olivia Gaynor led Peabody with 10 points each.
According to Peabody head coach Stan McKeen, both Avery Bettencourt and Ava Ryan “played well.”
Saugus 71
Winthrop 50
The Sachems couldn’t miss against the Vikings in enemy territory. Junior guard Peyton DiBiasio led Saugus with 27 points while teammate Ella Castle put up 13. Kaitlyn Hashem added eight points while Shalyn Sewell and Taylor Deleidi scored seven each.
For Winthrop, Amina Barry registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lily Conway scored 13 for the home side.
Masconomet 63
Marblehead 21
The Chieftains continue their stellar season taking care of business against Marblehead. Magicians head coach Paul Moran gave credit to Masconomet.
“They dominated from start to finish,” he said.
Marblehead will look to bounce back on the road against KIPP on Wednesday.
