NAHANT — The Johnson School announced the return of its Youth Art Month (YAM) exhibition at the Nahant library, which will officially kick off Thursday, Feb. 27 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
The exhibition will run from Feb. 27 through March 27 at 15 Pleasant St. and will be open for viewing during regular library hours. Library Director Nori Morganstein expressed her excitement by saying, “We received lots of positive feedback about the artwork and the reception. People really enjoy looking at the students’ artwork.”
YAM is celebrated nationally during each March to emphasize the importance that visual art education has on fostering creativity and self-expression, according to the press release. “Art gives students a way to express themselves and share their thoughts without needing words,” Laura Petrovich-Cheney, art teacher at Johnson Elementary said.
She continued. “It’s that moment where they can really connect with who they are. For me, teaching and encouraging creativity is so exciting; it’s what I love most about what I do.”
This year’s exhibition will feature a unique glimpse at what’s to come: the Johnson Elementary School will be unveiling its new mascot, the blue lobster, which was drawn by fifth grade student Mary DiLisio. It was a collaborative effort between Superintendent of Schools Rob Liebow, Principal Kevin Andrews, Library teacher Kayla Harrington, and Nahant native Tucker Allard.
Mary’s design will take center stage at the display. “It was great to be a part of this project, and I’m honored that my design was chosen,” Mary said in the press release.
