It was always going to be a magical season for the Saugus-Peabody wrestling team. After losing teammate Freddy Espinal back in September, the team battled in his name each match and now they can officially be called Northeastern Conference Dual Meet champions.

Saugus-Peabody defeated Beverly 46-29 in enemy territory and are an impressive 16-0 on the year.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marblehead 50

KIPP 25

The Magicians clinched their 10th win of the season to qualify for the postseason. Marblehead was led by Tessa Andriano with 16 points. Greta Sachs played her best game of the season finishing with 12 points, according to head coach Paul Moran.

“Everyone contributed and it was a great team win,” Moran said.

Lynn Classical 39

Triton 35

The 11-4 Rams keep on rolling. Lynn Classical was led by Keisha Perez (11 points) and Divine Egbuta (10).

“Tight game all the way through,” said Classical coach Tom Sawyer. “It was tied, 28-28, after the third quarter, but give the kids credit. They made just enough plays to win the game and I’m really proud of them.”

Gloucester 51

Peabody 46

The Tanners lost a close battle with Gloucester. Maia Davis scored 11 points and teammate Aliana Ryan finished with nine to lead Peabody. Peabody will look to bounce back on Friday against North Andover.

BOYS HOCKEY

Pope Francis 2

St. Mary’s 1

St. Mary’s lost a heartbreaker at Connery on Wednesday. It was a scoreless game until one minute remaining in the second period when Colton Carpenter opened the scoring to give St. Mary’s the lead. The goal was assisted by Joey Calder and Finn Racki.

Unfortunately, Pope Francis battled back and found the game-tying goal with 40 seconds left in the game after the Spartans couldn’t clear the puck.

Then in overtime, Pope Francis scored a breakaway goal.

Matthew Smith Jr. registered 24 saves.

“Really proud of how they played tonight. They didn’t deserve to lose. It’s hockey – On to Bishop Feehan,” Spartans coach Matthew Smith said. “Hopefully we can learn from the few mistakes we made that cost us the game.”

St. John’s Prep 5

St. John’s High 3

St. John’s Prep was trailing 3-2 entering the third period before the Eagles scored three goals in the final period to come out with the win.

TRACK AND FIELD

It was a big day for Peabody’s track and field. Entering the match, if the boys won they would be crowned Northeastern Conference champions, and if the girls won, they would clinch a share of the NEC title with Marblehead.

The boys did their job with a 50-26 win to be crowned champions.

On the girl’s side, the Tanners won 57-29 to earn a share of the NEC title with Marblehead.

Kayley Bunn, Tamara Kemigsha, Ella Braz, Avery Marcus, Lauren Foley, Jane Haight, Makayla Kokonezis, and Alessandra Forgione won events for Peabody.

Brooke Lomasney placed third in the 1,000 meters and  Emma Wardle took third in the mile to help secure the win for Peabody.
