LYNN — After last week’s debut of the Youth Indoor Track Series at Lynn Tech, the action returned for another week of speed, smiles, and standouts.
It also returned with a new event: the 50-yard hurdles. The hurdles were pizza boxes – coming in two sizes depending on the athlete’s ability – and donated by Pizza Lovers on Essex St.
Lynn’s Lovely Lozano, an 8-year-old, had the honor of becoming the first winner of the event. She ran 9.6 seconds in girls action, followed closely by Rosaline McNamara, an 11-year-old from Rockport (9.7).
The boys hurdling event was a 1-2-3 Lynn sweep, courtesy of Bryce Hill (7.6), Nathaniel Mejia (8.6), and Tykil Lozano (9.2).
Peabody’s Chanel Goncalves, age 13, won the girls 50-yard dash in 8.3 seconds, followed by Manchester’s Vera Migonis (age 8; 8.7).
Hill won the boys 50-yard dash in a quick 6.9 seconds. He was a multi-winner, running 49.0 in the boys 300-meter, followed closely by Peabody’s Aiden Trainor (age 14, 49.4).
The girls 300-meter was won by Lynn 12-year-old Jennifer Matul in 58.7 seconds, with Goncalves placing second in 59.2.
Then came another Lynn sweep, this time in the girls 600-meter (nearly 4 laps): Siena-Rose Summa (age 12; 2:23.0), Matul (2:34.0), and Evelyn Perez (age 10; 2:48.0). In boys action, Trainor and Peabody’s Sean Silva (age 13) tied in different heats (2:17.0).
Goncalves (7:19.0), Summa (7:42.0), and Matul (8:03.0) made up the top three in the girls mile. Trainor was first among boys (5:54.0), followed by Lucas Gomes (age 12; 6:30.0), who had the longest commute of all from Attleborough.
There was also a non-timed relay in which each runner ran multiple half-laps, passing on a baton to other runners.
Week three continues this Sunday. Events will be the 50-yard hurdles, 50-yard dash, 220-yard, 440-yard, 880-yard, shuttle relay, and standing long jump.
