LTTE: Stop Congress’ cruel cuts now

To the editor

February 9, 2025 by To the editor

To the editor:

I am angry that Congress wants to enact more tax cuts for the wealthy. And I am disgusted they want to cut SNAP and Medicaid to pay for it.

SNAP and Medicaid provide essential services to millions of Americans. Children, families, seniors, and people with disabilities rely on these services to stay fed and healthy. And don’t believe the political rhetoric – these programs are well-managed, and those receiving benefits who can work do work.

Is Congress really going to let kids go hungry and seniors lose health care so that Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos can get richer?

When the Trump Administration recently tried to freeze SNAP and Medicaid payments, people were in a panic, wondering if they could buy food or take their kids to the doctor. Fortunately, the Administration backed off before more harm was done. If Congress enacts cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, the harm will be permanent.

Our members of Congress must reject any legislation that cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, or other core anti-poverty programs.

Sincerely,

Anna Marston
