The cafeteria and classrooms at Lynn English were filled with the sights and sounds of science this week when the school’s Science Club hosted the monthly competition of the North Shore Science League Tuesday after school.
Students from a dozen high schools including English participated in the meet, which included three events: Electrochemistry, Circuits, and Anatomy. It was a good day for the home team, with English taking first place in the Bones, Bones, and More Bones event (anatomy). English placed sixth overall in the 12-school event.
North Andover won the other two events and placed first overall, followed by Manchester-Essex and Andover.

“The science team this year has been phenomenal,” said Jeff Bigler, a physics teacher at English who coaches the team and is president of the North Shore Science League. “The kids are super motivated and highly competitive.”
With one event remaining in March, English is in sixth place overall in the league, with the top five teams receiving awards at the final meet in April.
On Tuesday, one of the two English teams won the anatomy event, which was focused on identifying human bones and the corresponding body part. Anatomy teacher Peter Pappagianopoulos helped prepare the students and also ran the event.
Bigler wore three hats on Tuesday, coaching the English team, hosting the competition and president of the league. He revived the English team when he came to the school to teach in 2011. In 2024, English won the overall award for Best in Chemistry.
“The kids are really enjoying the competitive atmosphere,” he said.
