Swampscott says: ‘Bring on the snowmen’

Zach Laird

February 16, 2025 by Zach Laird

SWAMPSCOTT — Though some may have dreaded the news of six more weeks of winter, the town is eagerly anticipating the next round of snowfall — so the community-wide competition for “best snowman” can finally kick off.

Swampscott Recreation will be sponsoring a fun contest for the town where residents will get the chance to go head-to-head building snowmen on their front yards or at any Swampscott park. Winners of the contest will receive a $25 gift card, which can be used for Swampscott Recreation’s activities and programs throughout the rest of 2025.

Residents can choose to submit their entry in one of four categories: best traditional snowman, best snow creature, most creative, or funniest creation.

Participants are required to take a picture of their creations, which they must be featured in, and they’ll have to email their submissions to the Director of Swampscott Recreation, Danielle Strauss, at [email protected].

There were a set of rules involved with the contest, too. Contest entries are for residents of town only. Residents must also build the snowman between the first snowfall and March 30, when the contest ends. All entries must be appropriate for public display. By submitting an entry, contestants grant Swampscott Recreation permission and authority to use said pictures in any reasonable advertising or promotional activities.

“It’s such a fun event that we’ve been doing for a few years now,” Strauss said. “We first started the event during the COVID-19 pandemic to give people something nice to look forward to, and people really liked it and really responded to it, so we kept bringing it back each winter.”
