Swampscott’s ReachArts to cease operations

SWAMPSCOTT — The ReachArts organization announced on Facebook Wednesday morning that it will be ceasing operations effective immediately.

ReachArts is a nonprofit group of artists and residents that worked to create a cultural hub throughout Swampscott, according to its website.

“After much thoughtful consideration, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cease operation of ReachArts,” the post said. “We are deeply grateful for the support that you have shown our organization.

The group cited the critical loss that it recently suffered when ReachArts co-director Heidi Shear passed away at the age of 66 back in January. “As many of you know, ReachArts suffered a blow with Heidi Shear’s unexpected passing earlier this year,” the post said. “Heidi was not only the beloved leader of ReachArts, but also a passionate advocate for all forms of art.”

It was mentioned that all artist registry auto-renewals have been turned off so that residents will not be charged for any future renewals. The organization will keep the registry live until May 15, at which point the website will be taken down.

“In Heidi’s spirit of fostering the arts, we will be distributing our remaining funds to local arts-related organizations that will continue to support the North Shore arts community,” the post said.

After the news made the rounds online, several residents commented in response to the impact the news had on the community. “It is very sad indeed. I hate seeing such a great organization that supports the arts close,” one commenter said.

“This is sad on so many levels,” another commented.
