PEABODY — The YMCA of Metro North and the Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs awarded the 2025 Legislative Champions Award to two Peabody legislators at the annual State Advocacy Day on Feb. 13.

According to a release from the YMCA of Metro North, Rep. Tom Walsh and State Sen. Joan Lovely were recognized for their unwavering commitment to strengthening communities through the YMCA’s mission.

“The YMCA is deeply grateful for the support of our legislative champions, Rep. Walsh and Sen. Lovely, who continually advocate for policies that uplift children, families, and communities,” said Kathleen Walsh, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metro North. “Their leadership ensures that we can provide critical programs, from early childhood education to health and wellness initiatives, improving the lives of so many across Massachusetts.”

State Advocacy Day brought together 25 YMCA associations with almost 300 YMCA representatives in attendance to showcase to state legislators what the organization has to offer and to discuss topics that pertain to their operations.

“It was an honor to accept the Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs Legislative Champions Award,” Lovely said. “I am deeply grateful for the recognition and thank the YMCA for the work they do each and every day to support the health and wellness needs of our communities. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with, and advocate for, the YMCA and the important work they do for individuals and families alike.”

The legislators have made significant contributions to YMCA initiatives by securing funding for after-school programs, promoting public health efforts, and advancing equity in recreational and educational opportunities. Their advocacy has had a lasting impact on thousands of families who rely on YMCA services every day.

“From daycare to swim lessons, every day the Torigian YMCA provides valuable, fundamental services for Peabody families,” Walsh said.  “Residents across the Commonwealth benefit from their local YMCA, and I am pleased to advocate for this important community-minded organization.”
