You know what I’ve been thinking? It’s not how you start. It’s, well, you know…
Lynn Tech’s boys basketball team, helmed by former 1,000-point scorer and Head Coach Corey Bingham, began the winter with a 2-7 record.
But as Bingham and company hoisted the Spartan Classic championship trophy inside of the Tony C. Gymnasium on Tuesday, that all seemed like ancient history. The Tigers (12-8) took down host St. Mary’s, 68-64, behind a 29-point, five-assist performance from Giovanni Jean, who was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
“The Tigers came to play today,” Bingham said. “We already had them the last time (a 61-53 loss in December), but we let it slip. This game, we scored down the stretch.”
That they did, with help from Travis Sanchez (16 points, 4 steals) and Brandon Antwine (9 points), among others.
“From the beginning to the end, it was something to watch,” Bingham said,
In round one of the tournament, Tech took down Woburn, 73-50, on Sunday to advance to the title game. Leading the Tigers were Andy Batista (18 points, 3 assists), Jean (16 points, 4 rebounds), Antwine (13 points, 4 steals), and Awan Awan (6 points, 15 rebounds).
Now, the moment of truth. Tech waits for its Division 4 state tournament pairing, to be released at 1 p.m. Saturday. Last season, the Tigers advanced to the round of 8 before falling to top-ranked Wareham in enemy territory.
Tigers, good week.
