LTTE: Spellios is unfit for committee

To the editor

February 24, 2025 by To the editor

To the editor:

I recently read of the appointment of Mr. Peter Spellios to the Swampscott Town Administrator Search Committee on the Town website. This raises serious concerns about the priorities guiding this process. Leadership matters and our next Town Administrator will play a critical role in rebuilding trust, improving town operations, and ensuring transparency. Unfortunately, Mr. Spellios’ past record suggests he is not the right person to help select the leader Swampscott needs.

During his tenure on the Select Board, Mr. Spellios was a vocal supporter of our previous Town Administrator, under whose leadership the town faced multiple discrimination complaints, ongoing union disputes, and widespread dissatisfaction among employees. There was little respect shown to town residents who raised questions and concerns about the future of our Town. Rather than fostering collaboration and trust, this period was marked by division and disregard for community input. The consequences of that leadership still linger, and we cannot afford to repeat past mistakes.

Recently, I heard that there was an anonymous Instagram page, connected to Mr. Spellios, that openly disparages a current Select Board member. An action like this does not uphold the values of constructive dialogue or good community standards. By engaging with social media for this purpose represents a willingness to amplify division rather than foster goodwill—a concerning trait for someone tasked with selecting Swampscott’s next Town Administrator.

During his tenure on the Select Board, I observed many instances when Mr. Spellios demonstrated a condescending attitude when responding to comments made by women who served on the board.  Being a member of the Search Committee requires professionalism and mutual respect, and not someone with a history of dismissive behavior toward colleagues. I do not believe he should not have a role in choosing our next Town Administrator.

Our town needs a search process that reflects integrity, inclusivity, and a commitment in the selection of a Town Administrator who values transparency and respect for all stakeholders. Having a member of the Search Committee with a track record of division, questionable judgment, and concerning interpersonal behavior sends the wrong message. Swampscott deserves better.

Sincerely,

Martha Driscoll Cesarz

Swampscott
