SWAMPSCOTT — High School Principal Dennis Kohut announced late Friday afternoon that he will be stepping down from his position after the 2024-25 school year to pursue an opportunity outside the district.
Kohut began his career at the high school in 2006 as an English teacher and later became department head in 2016. He also served as the assistant principal for some time after the former principal, Robert Murphy, was on medical leave.
He has a master’s degree in School Administration from Endicott College and a master’s in Education from the University of Massachusetts-Boston. While he worked to get his master’s at Endicott, Kohut served as a principal intern for the 2014-2015 school year.
“This was not an easy decision, as I have deeply valued my 18 years at Swampscott High School and the relationships I have built with our students, families, faculty and staff,” Kohut said in a statement. “It has been a privilege to serve the communities of Swampscott, Nahant, and Boston to witness the growth and achievements of our students.”
Kohut looked back at some of the accomplishments he’s most proud of, citing the National Blue Ribbon Award for closing achievement gaps to the Innovation Pathways program (a service that provides career connections through an innovative curriculum and hands-on experience). Kohut said he’s also proud of the school’s work to foster a more inclusive environment for all students.
“We have worked hard to create the best possible educational experience for our students,” Kohut said. “It’s been an honor to have been a part of shaping the futures of these amazing young people.”
He expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and partnership during his time at the high school, noting that the communal involvement in their children’s education has been instrumental to the school’s success.
“I am confident that Swampscott High School will continue to thrive under the next administration. I know that this dedicated faculty and staff will continue to provide an exceptional learning environment for our students,” Kohut said.
Throughout the next several months, Kohut will work closely with the incoming superintendent, Jason Calichman, and the incoming administrative team to ensure a smooth transition.
