SAUGUS — A Saugus man pled guilty to the embezzlement of $180,000 while working as a teller at TD Bank, according to a press release for the United States Attorney’s Office.
Derek Aut, 28, who was formerly from Revere, has agreed to plead guilty to the embezzlement. Aut originally appeared in court on Dec. 18 for embezzlement by a bank employee and aggravated identity theft. He was released after his first appearance in federal court.
According to documents, Aut stole from the bank accounts of two customers by forging their signatures on withdrawal slips, among other things. One victim had noticed money missing from her account, and Aut allegedly attempted to cover up the crime by taking money from the second victim and placing it in the first victim’s account.
It is alleged that Aut took more than $180,000 from the victims.
The charge of embezzlement by a bank employee can lead to a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release and a $1 million fine. The charge of aggravated identity theft includes a mandatory sentence of two years in prison to be served consecutive to any other sentence imposed.
