Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament action-packed

The 47th Annual Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament entered its quarterfinal rounds Friday night at Fecteau-Leary Middle School. The action continued Saturday with boys and girls action.

The four-game docket of girls games kicked off with No. 3 Cobbet taking on Division 1 counterpart Connery, ranked sixth. The Lady Cougars won the defensive battle, 6-3, behind five points from Kelly DeLeon. Melanie Aguilar was Connery’s leading scorer. Cobbet takes on top-ranked Hood Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the first D1 girls semifinal.

Game two saw No. 4 Ingalls battle No. 5 Harrington in the last D1 girls quarterfinal. Ingalls’ balanced attack proved too much for the Hornets en route to an 8-2 win. Heidy Mendez Niz scored four points for the Rockets. Nora Asemota scored a basket for Harrington before being sidelined with an ankle injury. Ingalls plays Sisson Wednesday at 4:40 p.m.

In Division 2 girls action, No. 3 Drewicz took on the No. 6 Brickett Tigers. Brickett cut the lead to one point with less than a minute to play, but Drewicz ran out the clock and secured a 10-9 victory. Jalexie Robles and Aranza Aponte both had four points apiece for Drewicz. Brickett’s Anilely Ramirez Robles was the game’s high-scorer with six points. Drewicz will play No. 2 Callahan Thursday at 4:40 p.m.

Friday’s last game was another D2 contest, pitting No. 4 Washington against No. 5 Tracy. Washington held off a late push from the Eagles to win, 10-8. Washington’s Isairis Medina netted six points in the win. Yalianny Gomez had four for Tracy. Washington plays No. 1 Ford in the D2 semifinal Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Quarterfinal play continued Saturday. In the lone girls game of the day, No. 4 Lincoln-Thomson took on No. 5 Aborn in a Division 3 clash. The Lady Tigers squeaked out the win, 13-10, behind six points from Gabriela Chau Gutierrez and five from Laura Clemons-Cueto. Nya Gonzalez was Aborn’s high-scorer with four. Lincoln takes on the top-seeded Shoemaker on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m.

The first of six boys games pitted No. 4 Cobbet against No. 5 Hood and for the first time this year, the lower seed prevailed with a 29-19 victory. Jayce Ruiz was Hood’s high-scorer with 11, while Luke Vargo and James Danh chipped in seven apiece. Cobbet’s Damon Wilson scored eight of his team-high 10 points in the second half. Hood will play top-ranked Harrington Friday at 3:30 p.m.

The next Division 1 matchup saw No. 3 Sisson battle No. 6 Connery. The Quetzals were no match for the Eagles’ balanced attack (nine different players scored) in a 36-5 final. Liam McMahon had eight for Sisson. Edgar Zahir Mendoza and Jacari Brown Nash each had a basket for Connery. Sisson plays No. 2 Ingalls in the semifinal next Friday at 4:40 p.m.

Next up was the first of two Division 2 boys games. No. 4 Washington matched up against No. 5 Tracy and took the win, 24-8. Washington was paced by Jerron Johnson’s 10 points. Yeiron Troncoso-Santos had four for Tracy. Washington will face No. 1 Ford Friday at 7 p.m.

No. 3 Drewicz clashed with No. 6 Brickett in the day’s second D2 contest. The Dolphins led wire to wire and prevailed by a score of 35-12. Julian Chear was outstanding for Drewicz, scoring 18 points. Miguel DePaula and Neymar Daniel Darinus each scored three points for the Tigers. Drewicz takes on No. 2 Callahan Friday at 5:50 p.m.

Division 3 action kicked off with No. 4 Lynn Woods battling No. 5 Fallon. Lynn Woods survived a late push by Fallon to secure the 23-13 victory. Kolin Mace led the way for the Wolves with six points. Fallon’s Dom Castaldo led all scorers with nine. Lynn Woods plays top-ranked Aborn Thursday at 5:50 p.m.

The last game of the weekend saw the third-ranked Tigers of Lincoln-Thomson taking on No. 6 Sewell-Anderson. The Tigers took an early lead and never looked back en route to the 25-2 win. Ben Naugle was the game’s high-scorer with 10 points. Kwinn Brisbon scored two for Sewell. Lincoln next plays Shoemaker in the D3 semifinal Thursday at 7 p.m.

Play resumes Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
