March 9, 2025 by Joey Barrett

BILLERICA — Saturday night action inside of the Chelmsford Forum saw top-ranked Stoneham and No. 5 Winthrop square off in the Division 4 boys hockey semifinals. The Vikings took control early en route to a 5-1 upset victory.

Winthrop’s (15-6-2) next stop is the TD Garden in the state championship against No. 6 Dedham (15-8). The schedule will be released by the MIAA this week.

Winthrop’s Michael Holgersen began Saturday’s scoring barrage just minutes into the first period on the power play. With 6:32 remaining in the first, Joe Pumphret of the Vikings scored for a 2-0 cushion.

After the teams exchanged early second-period goals in nine seconds – Winthrop’s by Philip Boncore – Nick Romano and Boncore put the finishing touches on a dominant offensive period. The third period was scoreless.

With one mission remaining, Winthrop has defeated No. 28 Apponequet, No. 12 Norwell, No. 4 Littleton, and No. 1 Stoneham in its tournament run.
