LYNN — The Friendly Knights of St. Patrick will host their annual Irishman of the Year Award Thursday at 6 p.m. at Hibernian Hall, 105 Federal St., Lynn. This long-standing tradition, dating back to 1952, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the community.
This year’s recipient is John Lynch, district chief of the Lynn Fire Department. A firefighter for more than 30 years, Lynch is the first firefighter to receive this honor. He is a graduate of Lynn Tech and Anna Maria College and has been a Friendly Knights member since 2009. He has raised his family in Pine Hill and is a grandfather of 10.
The night will also be dedicated to the memory of Patrick R. Gecoya, a longtime educator at Lynn Tech and a Hall of Fame member at both Lynn Tech and Lynn Classical. A former athlete and coach, Gecoya played a vital role in the local education system. To honor his legacy, the organization is establishing a scholarship at Lynn Tech in his name.
The evening will be emceed by Bill McDonald, chairman of the Friendly Knights, who has been a member for nearly 30 years. The event will include dinner and award presentations, with honorees and special guests expected to arrive by 5:30 p.m.
