Swampscott helps residents plan for retirement

Zach Laird

March 11, 2025 by Zach Laird

SWAMPSCOTT — The town’s Senior Center is gearing up to host an insightful seminar for community members preparing for retirement, discussing everything from finances to personal fulfillment.

According to Director of Aging Services Heidi Whear, she’s eager to have three influential speakers come before community members to touch on a number of different topics and enrich the lives of residents. Bill Harris, Dorian Mintzer and Marcia Mantell will be in attendance to speak.

Harris, the first of the three speakers, will cover the realm of finances regarding retirement. Harris is the co-founder of WH Cornerstone Investments and the author of “Inheriting Your Spouse’s IRA: The Widow’s Guide to Keeping More of Her Assets.” Also a columnist, Harris has strong beliefs in transparency and education.

Mintzer, the second scheduled speaker for the event, will be addressing how the notion of retirement is the start of a completely new phase in a person’s life. Mintzer juggles being a retirement coach, consultant, and popular speaker who combines her professional experience with personal insights to bring new perspectives to people entering the next phase of their lives.

When speaking with residents, Mintzer will touch on “integrating parts of yourself to grow whole,” according to the flyer.

Mantell, however, will be speaking to attendants about Social Security and Medicare. She currently acts as the president of Mantell Requirement Consulting. She is also the author of “Creating Your Medicare Recipe: Your guide to enrolling on time and without penalties,” “Cookin’ Up Your Retirement Plan,” and “What’s the Deal with Retirement Planning for Women.”

“Swampscott For All Ages is excited to be able to provide this program for anybody who is between five to 10 years from retirement,” Whear said. “It really gives them ideas about what there is to look forward to after they retire.”

She added that the primary focus would be people approaching retirement, but that any community members who have already retired are welcome to attend the event. “We’re hoping to look at not just the financial side, which is really paramount on peoples’ minds, but also lifestyle, because that’s also really important for people.”
