SAUGUS — In alignment with the United Methodist Church (UMC), East Saugus United Methodist Church has shared a simple message online: “Act now to protect immigrant families & communities.”
More specifically, the Protestant denomination is urging people to support immigrants through the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act (H.R. 1061).
“The Protecting Sensitive Locations Act (H.R. 1061) is vital legislation that would prohibit immigration enforcement actions in spaces that provide essential services and refuge, such as houses of worship, schools, hospitals, courthouses, and other community centers,” according to the UMC’s website.
One way to show support, according to the church, is by contacting local representatives and senators to support H.R. 1061.
The bill proposes an amendment to Section 287 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to limit immigration enforcement actions at sensitive locations, clarify the powers of immigration officers in such spaces, address other related issues, according to Congress.gov.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) on Feb. 6, 2025, and has not yet moved forward. Of the 65 cosponsors, two are from Massachusetts: Rep. James P. McGovern and Rep. Lori Trahan.
The UMC also provided an example message on its website for supporters to use when reaching out to lawmakers:
“As a United Methodist, I am called to uphold the dignity and worth of every person, recognizing that all are created in the image of God. The United Methodist Social Principles affirm in the Rights of Immigrants, ‘the dignity, worth and rights of migrants, immigrants and refugees, including displaced and stateless people.’ Right now, immigrant families in our communities are living in fear of being detained in places that should offer safety — churches, schools, hospitals, and courthouses.”
East Saugus UMC continues to promote its message of welcoming all.
