Little Nest helps Swampscott plan for parenthood

SWAMPSCOTT — Resident Kate Hayford is on a mission to help young adults navigate the uncharted waters of first-time parenthood.

Hayford founded The Little Nest: a local business that helps parents prepare for lives with their child by offering a number of services. These range registry building, all the way to helping with postpartum supplies.

She sat down to explain what compelled her to start the business.

“I had my son this past July, and leading up to his birth, I had everything organized, and I started to think about how I could help others,” Hayford said. “I had friends who really struggled in the beginning with getting in routines and getting things streamlined.”

She expressed the main goals of the business are to help new parents in their transitions to parenthood.

“What I typically do is I get to know the parents, get to know what their needs are, and I’m very flexible regarding what people are looking for and what they need.”

The first service that the business provides is its “registry building,” where Hayford helps create routine-ready spaces that caters both to the parents as well as their child. She guides parents through gathering the essential items, in order to help parents feel fully prepared for the work ahead.

“It’s all about getting to know the families,” Hayford said. “Some people have a minimalist approach, others are different.”

Next up comes the nursery setup and organization, where, following the baby shower, all gifts are unboxed and arranged. Hayford also offers wash and laundry services to ensure clothes and linens are readily available for use.

“We come in, unpack, clean, organize and essentially get the nursery ready to go,” she explained. “A lot of people can feel very overwhelmed when they see a room full of things.”

Following the first two services, the third focuses on preparation for the hospital stay, as well as postpartum supplies. Hayford will help see everything from clothing, toiletries, blankets, and more, are all ready for the arrival of her clients’ children.

“Going into parenthood can just be very overwhelming for some people,” she said. “If I could be able to take a little bit of that away, then I think that’s something really special.”
