You know what I’ve been thinking? It’s been quite the stretch for Bella Owumi – aka, one of the top girls basketball players in the country.
The dual-threat St. Mary’s sophomore – one with more than 15 offers from colleges such as Miami, Louisville, Syracuse, Rhode Island, and Boston College – led her top-ranked Spartans to the Division 3 state championship with a 46-38 win against No. 3 Norwell.
“It feels amazing. It was rough going out early last year. We didn’t get the job done – even though we felt we could have,” Owumi said postgame. “Coming back this year, being stronger, we played really good teams during the season and I think it really prepared us.”
Defensive attention against Owumi was definitely ramped up this season, but she took it as a compliment.
“I know I’m a great player and people are going to try and stop me from scoring, but I just have to stay calm and I can’t get crazy,” she said. “I can’t let my team down.”
Well, she didn’t.
Owumi netted 19 points inside of Lowell’s Tsongas Center and captured her third state title.
Thursday evening, inside of Lynn Museum, Owumi received The Item’s Player of the Year award in girls basketball. She crossed 1,000 career points this season, was named Catholic Central League MVP, recorded 12 rebounds per game, and compiled more than 100 steals.
Bella, good week.
