The Red Sox weren’t the only ones enjoying game No. 1 Thursday. In high school lacrosse action, the Swampscott boys and Marblehead girls teams delivered offensive explosions.
With five first-quarter goals, the Big Blue jumped all over Hamilton-Wenham early en route to a 16-3 win at Blocksidge Field.
Jason Rothwell stole the show with five goals and an assist, while Drew Hause, Liam Keaney, Emerson Joy, and Chase Russo compiled two goals apiece. Joe Marino, Luke Michigan, and Tyler Ostroff also scored, while Gabe Tripp and Jack Duffy dished out assists.
Michigan was 11-of-16 on face-offs, while Timmy Sheehan made four saves between the pipes.
“Overall, a great win,” said Swampscott Coach Geoffrey Beckett. “The boys came out on fire and had a great first quarter and never looked back. Great to see some new faces doing well in Joe Marino, Gabe Tripp, Tyler Ostroff, Emerson Joy, and Will Ficken.”
Next up for Swampscott is Saturday’s jamboree at Reading Memorial High School beginning at noon.
In girls’ competition, Marblehead came out firing with an 11-6 halftime cushion against Woburn. From there, it was smooth sailing as the Magicians won, 16-10, at SSG Christopher N. Piper Field.
Maddie Forbes and Caitlyn Ryan each scored four goals, followed by Zoe Dwyer (3 goals), Gretchen Smith (2), Kathryn Commoss (2), and Ramona Gillett (1). Forbes also delivered four assists, while Molly Bullard made nine key saves.
“Great start to the season,” said Marblehead Coach Annie Madden. “There were goals distributed across grade levels, showing depth in our bench. We aren’t relying on any one or two players. Defense looking strong, with Molly coming up with big saves. We have plenty to learn from as we look forward into the season.”

Eddie Lewis Jr. recorded a relief win on the bump alongside two hits at the plate, and Tech rolled in game No. 1. Colin Newhall was 2-for-4 and Jendo Diaz compiled a triple and double.
“I definitely have a resilient bunch of guys on this team,” said Tech Coach Eddie Lewis. “My coaching staff and I have been preparing these guys every day to take the field, and although we haven’t gotten much of an opportunity to get outside, I’m extremely proud of everyone in the program – from coaches to the players.”
