LTTE: Why I’m voting for MaryEllen Fletcher

To the editor

March 30, 2025 by To the editor

To the editor:

It’s my pleasure to support MaryEllen Fletcher’s Swampscott Select Board re-election bid.

Thirty years ago, Jill and I dropped anchor on Swampscott’s shores, making a home and family, becoming part of the community. Yet, as “transplants”, we’re often asked: Why Swampscott? The answer is easy and still gratifying.

Besides its natural beauty, we were taken by Swampscott’s unique charm and history, a commitment to community, education, sports, and culture, with tolerance across a wide range of socioeconomic mores. This small town personifies “Cheers”, where everyone knows your name.

I now stand with MaryEllen, we need her more than ever. MaryEllen embodies all that’s good in Swampscott, upholding what first captivated us.

Don’t be misled by her authentic, balanced demeanor. MaryEllen fights for our veterans and elderly. She’s built solid relationships with all our town’s employees, police and fire, caring for every resident and business, battling for the greater good.  As she stands firm against the false pretense of small, special interests, MaryEllen continues to deliver optimal, all-inclusive outcomes. Remarkably, MaryEllen transcends political affiliations, supported across all sides.

As Swampscott faces critical challenges and rising costs, requiring clearer governance and responsible budgeting, I know MaryEllen’s leadership, expertise, and commitment to fairness will continue to be invaluable. She’s also a good, honest person.

This time of year always brings me back to the days when legendary basketball coach John Wooden ruled the hardwood. While writing this, I find MaryEllen fully personifies Coach Wooden’s wisdom, carrying the beacon of Swampscott’s light:

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are”.
