Returning key players from last season’s team that made it to the state championship game, the St. Mary’s baseball team got off to a great start with a 3-1 win over Milton on the road.
Senior pitcher Josh Doney continued where he left off from last season pitching six innings allowing just three hits and striking out nine.
When the Spartans needed to close out the game, they went to Jack Zimmerman who struck out the side in the seventh inning for the save.
Michael Demaino and Maxwell Parent both registered RBI singles.

One game, one win one for the Sachems who rallied in the bottom of the seventh to get the job done.
Down one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Alexa Morello hit the game-tying RBI double to tie the game at nine.
Then with eighth grader Sofia McCarrier on third base, McCarrier showed her speed and intelligence by scoring on a wild pitch for the game-winning run.
McCarrier earned the win from the circle as she came in and pitched four innings in relief.
Layla Demonte registered her first varsity hit and RBI. Senior captain Lily Ventre went 3-for-3, and Alannah Duong went 2-for-4 with two doubles.
The Sachems travel to Swampscott for a game against the Big Blue on Wednesday.

It was a close game from start to finish, but unfortunately for the Big Blue, the Hornets got the road victory to start the season.

The Witches went into Manning Field and left with the win.
The Jets had a tough time stopping Mikey Curtin who scored five goals for the visitors. Salem’s goalie, Vinny Milano, also played well, registering 14 saves.

An opening day win for the Spartans as Tommy Shea (6-2, 6-2), Stephen Nason (6-1, 6-3), and Jason Spaulding (6-2, 6-3) all picked up the win at singles.
St. Mary’s will look to keep up the momentum on Thursday when it takes on Bishop Fenwick.
