Sawyer Nutter looks to stay in the house in Swampscott

SWAMPSCOTT — Debbie Sawyer Nutter took time Monday afternoon to answer questions regarding her re-election to the Swampscott Housing Authority.

Sawyer Nutter explained that navigating the complex realm of affordable housing is not something that’s new to her. She said she has 45 years of experience in housing in the private sector and is eager to continue her work with the housing authority.

“Growing up, my parents were very mission-minded, and they always found ways to help people and create more affordable housing, to give people more opportunities,” Sawyer Nutter said.

Sawyer Nutter said she’s still relatively new to the work that goes into the Housing Authority.

“I’m still new, and I need help learning more about the idiosyncrasies between the public and the private side,” she said. “But I’m still hopeful to help the Housing Authority expand their mission.”

She spoke of what she considers to be one of the top priorities for the board. “I’ve only been here three months, but I think it’s important to consider the rehabilitation work for existing properties throughout town,” Sawyer Nutter said, highlighting the importance of maintaining the historical elements of town.

She said she aims to help get more focus on maintaining the existing properties and historical sights.

Sawyer Nutter continued, where she commented on a balance between continuing maintenance on existing properties while also focusing on creating more affordable housing. “Also, I really want to help expand the Housing Authority’s footprint, to be able to develop more affordable housing for residents,” she said.

“I just hope that we’re able to get more work done and create more housing for people,” she said.
