To the editor:
I was elected to the Lynnfield School Committee last year and soon appointed vice chair, as well as to the budget and policy subcommittees. Over the past year, we’ve made real progress by focusing on student achievement through policy reform, improved communication, staff retention, and curriculum review. We’ve given teachers a stronger voice and shifted our focus to outcomes that benefit students. The work I committed to has only just begun, and I’m running for re-election to continue elevating our district.
School Committee’s Role
The committee is responsible for policy, hiring the superintendent, managing the budget, and negotiating the teachers’ contract. I’ve been actively involved in all of these.
Two years ago, I started attending meetings to advocate for smaller class sizes. I found there was little appetite for policy reform. As a member of the policy subcommittee, I changed that by encouraging collaboration and transparency. Upcoming policy reviews are now posted in advance, and draft policies are shared publicly so the community can weigh in before we vote. This allows for stronger, data-driven decisions.
I’ve helped update key policies around class size, dress code, and cell phone use — changes requested by staff to improve school culture. Our cell phone policy is now a model across the state, with similar legislation gaining traction.
Teaching and Learning
A year ago, our schools were reeling after the departure of Kristen Vogel. Today, under Superintendent Tom Geary’s leadership, we’re thriving again. I’ve supported his focus on teaching and learning, including midyear evaluations and curriculum updates. Teachers are involved in the process and their feedback is valued.
As part of the hiring team for our new director of student services, I helped select a candidate who will restore stability to this crucial role. In the past, poor culture and low morale caused many great educators to leave. Today, those positions are filled and morale is high.
Communication and Budgeting
As vice chair, I’ve helped organize School Committee coffee hours, staff forums and principal-member meetings. I also help manage our new Facebook page to keep families informed with factual, timely updates.
On the budget subcommittee, I’ve advocated for smart, sustainable growth. For the first time in years, we recommended no position cuts. Our proposed 11% increase maintains all programming, staffing and class sizes. At the same time, we’ve cut inefficiencies, restructured central office roles and expanded high school course offerings — all without additional cost.
Looking Ahead
If re-elected, I will:
- Support a fair, fiscally responsible teacher contract to retain top talent.
- Plan long-term to elevate the district while navigating short-term challenges.
- Advocate for all students with a focus on teaching and learning.
- Explore non-tax revenue opportunities to help grow our schools.
Lynnfield’s schools are why I moved here six years ago. They remain my top priority. It has been an honor to serve, and I respectfully ask for your vote on April 8.
