Swampscott’s Seaglass Village sets sail for Salem

Zach Laird

April 2, 2025 by Zach Laird

SWAMPSCOTT — Seaglass Village, a volunteer-based organization aimed at helping older people live independently, announced that it will be expanding its services to include Salem as one of its communities.

Aside from serving residents throughout town, the organization has also served the communities of Nahant and Marblehead since its mission originally began back in 2021.

“We have received numerous requests over the past three years from people in Salem asking when we would be expanding here,” Heidi Whear, a founder and board member of Seaglass Village, said. “Due to our many connections with senior agencies in Salem, we feel that Salem is the perfect next step for us.”

The organization, which is a member of the Village-to-Village network, remains committed to making positive differences in the lives of those they serve by fostering ways for fellow neighbors to help each other, according to the press release. Dozens of volunteers provide numerous services, such as providing rides, making friendly stop-ins, as well as a wide variety of social events to keep those they service in an active lifestyle.

In order to properly spread the word about the next steps for the organization, Seaglass Village will be utilizing several different methods. These include press outreach, word of mouth, and community presentations. The organization’s goal is to enroll at least 15 new members and 30 volunteers before the organization officially “moves into” Salem.

“We are excited to start this new chapter, and encourage those who may benefit from our services or who want to contribute as volunteers to get involved,” Whear said. “If you have a friend in Salem who could benefit from our volunteer services, or if you belong to a group where we can share our mission, please contact us. We would love to connect and make Seaglass Village a vibrant part of Salem’s community.”
