LTTE: Re-elect Kristen Elworthy to continue progress in schools

To the editor

April 3, 2025 by To the editor

To the editor:

Since being elected to the School Committee last April, I’ve worked to restore the focus on excellence in our schools. In just one year, we’ve made real progress – but there’s more to do. I’m asking for your vote on April 8th to continue this momentum for another three years.

Proven leadership in a critical year

Since September, I’ve served as Chair, navigating contract negotiations, a difficult budget, and a proposed town-wide override vote. Through it all, I’ve worked to keep Committee business efficient and professional, always focused on our core mission: providing the best education for our students.

One of the most pressing issues facing voters right now is the proposed override, which will allow us to maintain class sizes and essential services for students. I’ve participated in and helped drive a thorough budget process with both the school district and town. Over the past year, I’ve demonstrated that when tough choices are on the table, I deliberate carefully, exercise judgment, and take a clear stance. I trust that Lynnfield residents, who have consistently prioritized education, will continue to do so when presented with a fiscally responsible plan that preserves Lynnfield’s status as a premier school district.

Additionally, I am particularly proud of the turnaround in teacher retention. In December 2023, staff morale was at an all-time low, leading to the resignation of the former Superintendent and two School Committee members. Today, we’ve stabilized leadership, improved collaboration, and rebuilt trust with educators.

To me, leadership means making tough decisions based on the best data available and standing firm on the choices that best serve our students, our staff, and ultimately the Town of Lynnfield.

Results that matter

In under a year, this Committee has made real strides in strengthening our schools. Some of the achievements I am most proud of include:

Budget & Negotiations – Currently as part of the bargaining team and Budget Subcommittee, building consensus on district priorities among the Committee, town officials, and the public.

School Culture Improvements – Advocated for a new cell phone policy to remove classroom distractions and supported a revised dress code.

Curriculum Collaboration – Backed Superintendent Geary’s approach to curriculum development, ensuring teachers have a voice.

Expanded Course Offerings – Supported the addition of a number of new LHS courses (including new electives and AP classes) this year, with more planned next year, with no budget impact.

Improved Communication – Helped launch school and community coffees to strengthen dialogue between the School Committee, Superintendent, teachers, and families.

Town Collaboration – Worked with town officials to advocate for fiscally responsible growth.

Superintendent Accountability – Established a public mid-year evaluation to increase transparency and leadership accountability.

A vision for the future

After a year of momentum and progress, there is still work to do. My immediate priorities include:

Securing a fair and competitive teacher contract that will continue to attract top talent and retain our excellent educators.

Navigating this challenging budget season to ensure our schools receive the funding they need.

Continuing to advocate for the best possible learning outcomes for all students.

As a Lynnfield High School graduate and parent of students in the district, I know firsthand the value of our schools. Families move here because of the strength of our education system. It’s the School Committee’s role to protect and strengthen that foundation.

It’s been an honor to serve the Town of Lynnfield, and I hope to earn your vote on April 8 to continue this critical work.
