LYNN — Lynn English has announced their next varsity boys basketball head coach in Dina Wavezwa. Wavezwa takes over the program after former head coach Alvin Abreu stepped down from the position in early March.
“We’re very happy with our choice with Dina. He’s got a history with Lynn English High School. In addition to being an alum, he was part of Antonio Anderson’s staff that won back-to-back state championships,” English Athletic Director Dick Newton said. “He’s a role model the kids can emulate themselves after. He’s a great dad and a very good coach.”
Wavezwa, a former Bulldog who graduated from Lynn English in 1992, said he was “really excited” when he got the news that he was hired as the team’s next head coach.
“I grew up literally right across the street over at the Meadows. I’ve been there from first grade all the way until I graduated high school,” Wavezwa said. “Every morning I woke up and saw Lynn English. I have always been a Bulldog.”
In addition to being an assistant coach at Lynn English, Wavezwa has been an assistant coach on Lynn Classical’s boy’s basketball team. Now, he’ll be in charge of his own team and he’s looking forward to continuing to build the program.
“I want to keep on building from what coach [Antonio] Anderson, Alvin [Abreu], even before that with guys like coach [Mike] Carr. I want to keep building a successful program,” Wavezwa said. “I want to get the kids to college whether it’s through being a student or an athlete.”
Wavezwa had waited his turn to become a head coach and now he feels this is the right time to make the step up.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while,” Wavezwa said. “When we were on coach Anderson’s staff, we all had plans of going to different schools. When he said he was leaving, I was going to apply for that job, but we all thought at the time that coach Alvin should get it because he was qualified for it. It’s been something I’ve been dreaming of.”
Now Wavezwa will assemble his coaching staff and look forward to how his team can compete at the highest level.
“We’re young. We’re going to be a young team so there’s going to need to be development of the players we have,” Wavezwa said. “Hopefully we can get a little height. I’ve been over here at Classical and know how much height they had and they’re returning everyone so that’s going to be a big battle. I’m just looking forward to getting everyone on board. I’m looking forward to getting my coaching staff together and taking it from there.”
