To the editor:
I am appalled that Congress is pushing forward with budget cuts that will strip healthcare and food assistance from millions of Americans. In a remarkable act of determination, Senator Cory Booker held the Senate floor for hours on end, his historic speech a testament to the power of resistance in “not normal times”.
Let’s be clear: when GOP leaders cry “waste, fraud, and abuse,” it’s a smokescreen to justify slashing funding for Medicaid and SNAP to bankroll more tax cuts for the Elon Musks of the world. At a time when many fear a recession, the very programs that keep families fed, healthy, and housed are under attack. The motive behind this is nothing short of shameful.
Medicaid and SNAP are lifelines for many struggling families. America doesn’t need more tax cuts for the rich, but leaders who will protect these programs that help communities thrive. Congress must reject these cruel cuts. Anything less is a moral failure.
