April 9, 2025 by Joey Barrett

St. Mary’s baseball team (3-0) doubled up Bishop Stang, 6-3, at Fraser Field in Lynn behind strong relief pitching from Jack Zimmerman (1.1 IP, K) and Jake Peterson (2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 K).

Zimmerman went home with the win. Kyle Doney (2 H, 2 R), Shea Newhall (2 H, R) and Maxwell Parent (H, 2 RBI) led the offensive charge for the Spartans, who visit Arlington Catholic Friday at 3:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Marblehead 12
Swampscott 2

The Magicians mercied traditional archrival Swampscott behind three hits from Colt Wales and two apiece from Greyson Leventhal and EJ Wyman. Carter Sahagian pitched all five innings and compiled eight strikeouts.

Will Brogna and Sam Baran pitched well in relief for Swampscott, while Dylan DiFilippo delivered a two-run single.

Cristo Rey Boston 5

Despite being down 0-2 early, the Tigers clawed back and came out with an emphatic win.

Eddie Lewis Jr. went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI, Dylan Nordyke went a perfect 4-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Jendo Diaz went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

The Tigers will face Lynn English on Friday at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

A seven-run third inning put the Spartans (2-1) ahead by 10 runs, and they never looked back en route to a dominant road win. Aliza Crean-Oviedo punched out four batters and allowed just two hits. The offense, which totaled 14 hits, was led by Jayla Walsh (3 H), as well as Abbey Sousa and Olivia DiSessa, who both hit three-run homers. Crean-Oviedo, Catherine Newbury, and Adyson Newhall combined for the shutout.

Everett 8
Lynn Classical 4

Stranding nine runners in scoring position, The Lady Rams (0-1) fell short in their season-opener. Aysia Olaes was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, also pitching six innings and recording five strikeouts. Nevaeh Eth was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

“Overall, it was very positive, seeing Everett is the defending league champion and smoked us twice last year,” said Classical Coach Joe Morin.

Masconomet 10
Saugus 3

Host Saugus (2-2) met its Masconomet match, falling by seven runs despite a handful of stellar performances at the plate. Lily Ventre was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a home run short of a cycle. Maria Silva roped a triple alongside an RBI, while Alannah Duong had multiple hits.

“We just couldn’t come up with a big hit today and left a lot on base,” said Saugus Coach Steve Almquist. “On defense, there were a couple of miscues that allowed three unearned runs. There were a lot of encouraging signs and we’ll continue to move forward.”

BOYS LACROSSE

Make it four games, four wins for the Eagles, who took care of business at Glatz Field in Danvers. Offensive leaders were Josh Haarmann (2 goals, assist) and Mac Crawford (2 goals), while Bo Minogue, Jack Weissenberger, and Nate Bernarducci shined defensively. Will Crawford won 16-of-19 face-offs, while Max Putney made five saves between the pipes.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Marblehead 17
Tewksbury 9

Maddie Forbes, Ramona Gillett, and Emma Ryan all scored three times as the Magicians (2-3) took down Tewksbury. Gretchen Smith, Caitlyn Ryan, Kathryn Commoss, and Zoe Dwyer delivered two-goal games, while Molly Bullard made five saves.

“Great win with many different goal-scorers,” said Marblehead Coach Annie Madden. “I’m proud of how we are continuing to grow as a team.”

North Andover 10
Peabody 3

Visiting Peabody allowed six goals in the first quarter and was “digging out from there,” according to Coach Michelle Roach. Brooke Lomasney (3 goals), Madi Barrett (assist), and Caitlin Snow (19 saves) led the Tanners.

“We held them to only four total [goals] for the remaining three quarters,” Roach said.

BOYS TENNIS

Danvers 4
Lynn Classical 1

Classical (0-1) dropped its first match of the season, but received a first singles win from Victor Bun (6-3, 6-4).

Swampscott 5
Winthrop 0

Swampscott received singles wins from Sam Schepens, Victor Zeissig, and Costa Shub en route to a shutout win against the Vikings. The duos of Julian Flacke/Caum Tierney and Elijah Stadtlander/Daniel Wabno secured doubles wins.

GIRLS TENNIS

St. Mary’s 3
Lynn Classical 2

St. Mary’s (1-1) returned to .500 with a cross-city win against Lynn Classical. Winning Spartans were Carolina Toranzo (singles), Layla Trahant/Calli Allaire (doubles), and Ava Gigliotti/Madison Desilets (doubles).

Lynnfield 4
Ipswich 1

Lynnfield got the better of Ipswich on enemy courts. Paige Martino, Lily Alves, and Kami Khiat recorded singles wins, while the duo of Fiona Asad and Nandana Nishanth won second doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Everett 3
Lynn Classical 1

In set scores of 19-25, 25-15, 21-25, and 24-26, Classical (1-3) fell for the first time this spring. Leading the Rams were Viet Tran (16 kills, 6 digs), Josh Gonzalez (8 kills), and Kenzel Lantano (35 assists, 2 kills, 6 digs).

“This was a tough game for us from the start,” said Classical Coach Chris LeBlanc. “We showed up tonight without the effort and want to compete in the GBL (Greater Boston League). Everett was excellent all night and we did nothing to make them uncomfortable. Hopefully, we learn from this and come out on Monday with a better effort against Malden.”
