SWAMPSCOTT — The Swampscott Democratic Town Committee and Republican Town Committee, in conjunction with The Item, will host a debate of the Select Board candidates Tuesday at the Senior Center.

The debate begins at 6:30 p.m. at 200R Essex St.

The three candidates, incumbent MaryEllen Fletcher (current chair of the board), incumbent Katie Phelan (vice chair) and challenger Liz Smith, will take the stage to answer questions about their candidacy and explain their perspectives to the community.

Swampscott Public Access Television will be covering the debate with online access available on the town’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

The debate will include the same four questions asked to each candidate, with three minutes allotted for response. After that segment, each candidate will be given the opportunity to ask one question of one other candidate.

Fletcher has decades of experience serving different town boards, including seven years on the Finance Committee, as well as the Capital Improvement Committee, Recreation Commission and Harbor and Waterfront Committee.

Phelan is eager to continue working to strengthen the community through thoughtful leadership and collaboration. She previously said listening and engaging with residents and town employees has been the core of her approach to the role.

Smith plans on bringing integrity, critical thinking, determination and passion to the role of town leadership, where she hopes to advance strategic initiatives that correlate directly with the wishes and needs of all residents.

For those interested, the debate can be viewed on Facebook and YouTube.
