So, I was watching a boxing match Saturday night – I’m the only one left I think – and heard the three words.
“And STILL undefeated,” the ring announcer said after 12 hard-fought rounds.
Remember 15-round fights? Rocky and Apollo do. Twice. Anyway…
And there it was. The winning fighter retained his perfect record. No losses. Not a scratch.
After a few weeks of spring sports, I started thinking about some of our local high school teams that remain undefeated.
Four of our teams have done so in highlight-reel, dominant fashion. Let’s check them out…
Lynn Classical baseball
Classical is 3-0 with wins against Lynnfield (5-4), Everett (1-0), and Medford (5-2). Second-year Coach Leon Elwell has his Rams doing all of the right things. They visit Malden Monday at 4 p.m. in search of win No. 4.
“Really proud of my guys,” Elwell said after the Lynnfield win.
Leading the way has been Christian Figueroa, who went 5 2/3 innings against Lynnfield with three strikeouts and just four hits allowed. From there, he went the distance against Everett and allowed no runs, no walks, and just two hits to go with nine punchouts. As for the cherry on top, he picked up an RBI against Medford.
Also contributing have been Braeden Ohannesian, Mark Walsh, Emerson Lara, Boo Disaia, and Gavin Collins, among others.
Swampscott girls lacrosse
Five games, no losses, 69 goals – is that good?
With victories against Bishop Fenwick (5-4), Lynnfield (15-11), Saugus (17-4), Winthrop (17-2), and Marblehead (15-10), the Big Blue are playing true to their name.
Coach Al Eaton’s squad is beyond versatile with names like Avery Laundry, Cecelia Tripp, Chloe Puzzo, Victoria Pierro, Quinn Kelleher, Fiona Keaney, Caroline Reen, Bridget Ubano, Audrey Heath, and Bridget Maloney all getting involved. And then some. Lilah Caplan has been rock solid between the pipes, per usual.
In Swampscott’s most competitive win (Fenwick), five goals were scored by different players.
“That’s what I love… we spread the scoring out pretty well and that’s always been the goal. It’s all about the team scoring,” Eaton said. “To see them spread out the scoring like this and provide a lot of assists, it’s great to see.”
St. Mary’s baseball
Four down, and the Spartans (4-0) are just getting started. With state championship aspirations in mind after reaching the title game last season, St. Mary’s just might catapult itself back to the big game in a few months.
Coach Derek Dana and company have wins against Milton (3-1), Archbishop Williams (11-0), Bishop Stang (6-3), and Arlington Catholic (5-2).
On the bump, Jack Zimmerman, Josh Doney, and Jake Peterson have been putting on clinics, while the offense has been carried by Nate Cutone, Kyle Doney, Shea Newhall, Maxwell Parent, and Michael Demaino, among others.
They’ve won the close ones, yet they’ve also taken care of business when they should. Let’s see what the Spartans have in store as the weather gets warmer.
Lynnfield girls tennis
The Pioneers (4-0) serve up victories against Beverly, Ipswich, Swampscott, and North Andover. Two of those matches have been 5-0 victories, while the other two were 4-1.
Not bad…
With Coach Craig Stone overseeing stellar athletes such as Paige Martino, Lily Alves, Vicky McCrann, Ella Hayman, Kami Khiat, Kathleen Brown, Christin Choi, Fiona Asad, and Nandana Nishanth, among others, the sky is the limit in Lynnfield.
“We have a little more depth on our team this season than in previous years with multiple players being able to step into the varsity lineup,” Stone said.
