SWAMPSCOTT — The town is looking to give the Swampscott Public Library some new upgrades to help improve the infrastructure.
According to Director of Facilities Max Kasper, a proposal for upgrades looks to improve various elements of the front entryway. Kasper said the town is working to reconfigure the front patio and entryway of the library as a way of modernizing certain parts of the structure that have faced wear and tear over the years.
Kasper noted the town is also looking to install a new window facade on the front side of the building. A window facade typically refers to the exterior face of the building that predominantly features windows as part of the design.
Also on the list of proposed upgrades is installing a new vestibule in the front of the building, which is generally known as a small entryway, or enclosed area, between the outer door and interior door of the building, which acts as a buffer zone between outside and inside the building.
Kasper said another item on the agenda would be revamping the handicap ramp, along with making other minor aesthetic improvements to the entrance.
One significant element of the upgrades to the library is its foundation — which Kasper said is in need of repairs. He explained that over the course of many years, the building had been used and operated in, certain issues regarding the infiltration of water had made its way into the basement. He added that the hope is to address the infiltration issue and ultimately stop the water from getting into the foundation and worsening the problem.
The town is working with architect Raymond Guertin on the project. Kasper said once a contractor is hired for the majority of the work, the estimated run time for the project would be several months before the work is completed.
